All about serums

Anti-aging serums are your best friend when it comes to skincare. As you age, the collagen production in your skin decreases. Therefore, ingredients like vitamin A derivatives are used because they play a huge in speeding up collagen synthesis. Let us look closely at two types of anti-aging serums and how they benefit the skin.

The first one is an anhydrous serum, which means that it does not contain any water. Anhydrous serums are usually oil-based and better for people with drier skin types.

Some of the best oils used for anhydrous serums are Blueberry Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Meadowfoam Seed Oil, and Kukui Nut Oil.

The blueberry seed oil has high levels of antioxidants which are amazing for the skin. They help fight free radical damage and brighten up hyperpigmentation, too! The blueberry seed oil has fatty acids and vitamin E to help strengthen the skin barrier and pave way for anti-aging effects.

Evening primrose is an emollient, which means it smoothens the skin and moisturizes it. It will also aid in reducing trans-epidermal water loss and make the skin baby soft.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil has the same purpose, i.e., moisturizing the skin and balancing out the natural sebum production on the skin.

Kukui nut oil has anti-inflammatory properties and is a great option for when your skin barrier has been compromised.

Lastly, Vitamin E is a high all-rounder ingredient with antioxidant, anti-aging, and moisturizing properties.

Now moving to the second type of anti-aging serum, which is aqueous. This means that it is a water-based serum that will get absorbed into your skin quickly.

Highlighted ingredients for an intensive moisturizer: Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, Blueberry Extract, Allantoin, and Caffeine.

Hyaluronic acid can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. It draws water from the surroundings into the skin for maximum hydration.

Aloe Vera, on the other hand, is soothing and anti-inflammatory. It’s effective against sunburns and helps retain moisture.

Blueberry extracts are chock full of antioxidants which reduce fine lines and wrinkles within the skin. They prevent and fight sun damage and thus, slow down the aging of our skin. UV protection is the biggest benefit that blueberry extract offers in this serum.

Allantoin is merely a soothing ingredient derived from the root of the comfrey plant. It protects the skin barrier from harm and moisturizes it as well. It helps get rid of bumps as well, hence, it promotes a smoother skin texture. What’s not to like?

Lastly, caffeine is a popular skin-brightening agent that is used in many products. It also has antioxidant properties, which we already know, provides excellent benefits to the skin.

Both these serums will do the job they are meant for, which is anti-aging and brightening. What you pick depends on your skin type and what benefits you hope to get from them. Remember, whatever you decide to purchase, a patch test is a must! And then you can focus on achieving the healthy and glowing skin you always wanted!
